One of the main principle of organic aquaculture is achieving a closed production cycle. Organic Wonder is the result of a full domestication process that has been completed in 1999: Since then, we no longer put any pressure on ocean to obtain larvae or shrimps.
To this date, our hatchery, hundreds of hectares of shrimp ponds, the feed plant and the packing plant have been awarded the Naturland (www.naturland.de) organic seal. Naturland
E.V. was the first German organic agricultural association to develop standards for aquaculture and in particular for organic shrimp farming.
Our farms have also been certified by Quality Certification Services (QCS), a USDA National Organic Program and ISO-65 compliant organic certification program, as raising our shrimps without the use of antibiotics, hormones, GMO or specific chemicals. At the farm, shrimps are seeded, live and grow at very low density to comply with organic concepts. Most of their feeding is from zooplankton and phytoplankton naturally grown in their ponds. To complete this diet, they are fed with duly certified organic feed stuff containing no residuals of pesticides or insecticides, no GMO, no antibiotics and no hormones.
During the 120 days of the production cycle in the grow-out ponds, no water exchange nor aeration is required as we have reached a balanced ecosystem within the pond through the use of beneficial micro-organism. Every pond is monitored daily to check
animal growth and health as well as water quality parameters. When the product arrives at the plant, a specific procedure is in place to process organic shrimps avoiding all external events of cross contamination. Traceability procedures enable us also to permanently control our flow of product and to track down any eventua l quality issue.
Organic shrimps are carefully handled by duly trained personal. No chemicals ever get in direct contact with the organic product. The plant also developped a specific organic handling procedure where the use of chemicals is exluded. It details all the measures taken to avoid any cross contamination with non-organic product. |
